As protests are growing in intensity following Iran’s questionable presidential election, Tweets are streaming in from Twitter users reporting challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi is under house arrest.

“Mir Hossein Mousavi is in house arrest, has no access to anywhere,” read one Tweet posted at 1:55 p.m. (PST).

Mousavi’s arrest could not be confirmed.

Mousavi has refused to concede defeat citing claims “there had been a shortage of ballot papers and millions of people had been denied the right to vote.”

Twitter users are also reporting Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, head of the Expediency Council, resigned from office earlier today.

The government said today that incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won Friday’s election with 62.63 percent of the vote and Moussavi received 33.75 percent of the vote.

Unconfirmed reports suggest Moussavi won with 45.54 percent of the vote, followed by Mehdi Karroubi with 31.95 percent. Ahmadinejad received 13.6 percent and former Revolutionary Guard leader Mohsen Rezaie received 8.91 percent of the vote, according to the reports.

  1. I’m stunned that Karroubi did so well. I thought he was going to be the Ralph Nader (lite) of the election (and when I say this, I mean the low vote voice of reason, not the “spoiler”)
