By all accounts it was a perfect event to allay any residual hard feelings between Supervisors Avalos and Daly who were at odds over how best to secure a balanced budget with a mayor who has a sweet tooth for ignoring the will of the Board, and voters.

California cannot continue to engage in battles each budget season. Because it could not find a supermajority to raise taxes, the state had to cut or reduce many of the public assistance programs serving as social safety nets for children, the poor, and the sick and the elderly. The Budget calls for taking $4.7 billion from the counties, which will force many counties to cut services even further. And again, the governor and the legislature had to resort to budget gimmickry to pass a budget, albeit an unbalanced one. It is time for change.

Over the last 10 years, I have been involved in the City’s budget process, first as the organizing director of Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, then as staff for Supervisor Chris Daly, where I organized year after year with budget stakeholders to create a budget that represented the interests of working people. These experiences have been invaluable in learning the intricate City budget process and, most importantly, the politically challenging but all-important process of coalition building among the different budget stakeholders in the City.

What is clear, Eric Jaye’s campaign style is soooo 2007 and Newsom, who is behind Jerry Brown in the polls, has not been able to raise much in the way of serious campaign funds, prompting insider speculation Newsom’s gubernatorial campaign is DOA.

Several elected officials including California Attorney General Jerry Brown, California Senator Mark Leno, Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, Mayor of Brisbane Sepi Richardson and DCCC Chair Aaron Peskin, joined in unity with the estimated 4,000 protesters in front of San Francisco City Hall.

The Irish American Democratic Club is one of the largest political clubs in The City and takes its role as the voice of the Irish in San Francisco politics very seriously. Since the club’s foundation, it has been consistently committed to the peaceful unification of Ireland.
