Deafening Silence:
Carmen Policy and Lennar Ignoring Requests
to Debate, Face Community
From the Proposition F Campaign
May 30, 2008
F is for Fairness Moving Forward with Opportunity for Both Sides
to Face the Bayview/Hunters Point
Concerns are rising that Lennar consultant Carmen Policy may continue ignoring calls for a debate before the Bayview/Hunters Point community. Since issuing an open invitation to Policy on Wednesday May 28, F is for Fairness has not heard from Policy or his employer Lennar Corp., the sole financier of the campaign for Proposition G and against F.
“They probably know better than to bring their lies here,” stated long-time Bayview/Hunters Point resident Esselene Stancil, a Prop. F supporter. “Lennar can’t tell Bayview what’s best for Bayview. We know our community.” Lennar’s refusal to face the Bayview community follows previous attempts to side-step vital issues on the June 3 propositions. To date, Lennar has refused to discuss Section 9 of Prop. G, which frees the developer from all obligations to the community, apparently for any reason whatsoever. Prop. G reads, “the final development plan for the Project Site may be materially different from the Project and the boundaries of the Project Site may be materially different,” depending upon “certain variables, including, for example and without limitation, market changes, economic feasibility and the timing of the 49ers departure from Monster Park.”
Considering the deteriorating negotiations with the 49ers, and Lennar’s stock price plummeting 19% this month, Prop. G would give Lennar 721 acres of waterfront San Francisco with nothing required in return. Additionally, Lennar quietly spent $106,000 on polling, but has not released any results since revealing that Prop. F was up 58% to 31% in early May. Lennar’s failure to share subsequent polling results suggests that likely voters remain suspicious about Lennar’s development promises. This backdrop may explain Carmen Policy’s deafening silence to calls for a debate before the Bayview/Hunters Point community. Policy remains unavailable for comment.
