In the hotly contested race for the open District 9 Supervisor seat, School Board President Mark Sanchez announced Tuesday he has garnered the coveted endorsement of the Sierra Club.
“Proven leadership skills combined with sound policy goals championing the environment make Mark Sanchez the clear choice for District 9,” Sierra Club Political Chair John Rizzo said.
Sanchez adds Sierra Club to a growing list of organizations giving him their exclusive endorsements including The United Educators of San Francisco and the San Francisco Green Party.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Sierra Club, which has long been at the forefront of the progressive movement for sustainability,” Sanchez said. “In my years of public service, I have always stressed the urgency of addressing issues of sustainability and global warming.”
“This endorsement is a validation of those efforts,” Sanchez added, a Green Party member who is known across the city for uniting a traditionally divided school board without compromising his progressive values.
Sanchez participated in drafting the Clean Energy Act for the November ballot, and was one of the first elected officials to publicly endorse the measure. Sanchez also advocates rooftop gardens, creating and improving open space throughout the City, expanding the urban canopy of trees, and moving the public transportation system toward 100% clean power.

In his article, “The Battle for the Board,” Supervisor Chris Daly wrote, “More concerning for Sanchez is the lack of excitement in the District for his campaign. … For the sake of the progressive cause, I have asked Mark Sanchez to consider dropping out of the D9.”
Just curious, does this endorsement help to change that strategy? What if Mark Sanchez receives more endorsements?
Daly said he has veto power over the Sierra Club’s endorsements. What happened?
Is the DCCC able to endorse Greens or Independents?
I am glad that the Sierra Club endorsed Mark Sanchez, but why is FCJ only covering one of the Sierra Club’s endorsements? I would like to read about all of the Supervisors that the Sierra Club endorsed, not just about District 9. For example, the Sierra Club also endorsed Tony Gantner from District 3 because he is an environmentalist dedicated to enhancing the beauty, livability, and sustainability of our City. Because I live in District 3, I would like to learn more about Tony Gantner and why he is only candidate from District 3 that was endorsed by the Sierra Club.
And Mark Sanchez was endorsed by Mark Leno! Kudos to Leno for endorsing a Green.
