Threaded throughout the Financial District, Occupy affinity groups engaged in various forms of non-violent activity such as chaining themselves with lock boxes to all the entrances to Wells Fargo's headquarters on California Street, staging a rally at the "bankers heart" sculpture at the foot of the Bank of America building, performing guerrilla theater as military personnel arresting "terrorists" (American citizens), and marching from Justin Herman Plaza throughout the financial district.

This type of community picket action for political purposes has a long and venerable place in ILWU history. Back in 1939 longshoremen honored a picket line set up at the Port of San Francisco by the local Chinese community to stop a load of steel being sent to then-fascist Japan for its war effort, at that time focused on mainland China, but soon crossing the Pacific. Again it was used in 1977 against a South African ship in protest of that country’s apartheid policies, in 1997 against a ship loaded by scab labor in support of the dockers in Liverpool, England, in 2003 to stop a ship being loaded with war materiel bound for the just-declared war on Iraq, and most recently just a couple of years ago against an Israeli ship in protest of the Israeli military attack on the Turkish ship bringing medical and construction supplies to Gaza.

Federal, state and local officials plan budget cuts instead of help. Human deprivation isn't discussed in high places, only ways to grab more wealth and power. In plain sight, America's no longer fit to live in. Neither are other Western countries, depriving the many for the few.

The clarion call of “We are the 99 percent” has driven home a blaring message about what protesters argue is a host of inequalities — of wealth, income, education, housing, economic opportunity, political clout, access to decent food and healthcare, and much more. Some protesters want to see corporate economic and political power reined in and others call for capitalism to be reformed, transformed or replaced. Proposals include enforcing existing regulations on corporate finance, breaking up corporate bank chains, creating a city-run municipal bank or expanding off-the-grid barter economies and alternative currencies.

There were thousands of us! Of course, the mainstream media did not report our numbers. The Sunday Chron buried the story on A11, putting a short local insert into a routine wire service roundup, and did not even attempt to estimate the crowd size. My estimate: at least 10,000 people marching, and it snowballed as we moved past Union Square and up Powell, through the cable car turnaround and back up Market toward the Civic Center.

The fact is, only the highest paid public employees – cops, firefighters, nurses, and those who can afford silk-lined suits (including Adachi) – have anything to really quibble about with Prop D. Why? Because Adachi’s pension reform measure is a progressive solution to a financial math problem no sane taxpayer, city employee, mayor, Board of Supervisors, Civil Grand Jury or union boss no longer denies exists.

In a letter sent to Lee, Adachi, the sponsor of Prop D, states, "I request you to join me in a public debate regarding the relative merits of our two pension proposals this month. As the two principals behind the competing ballot measures, I hope that we can work together to increase awareness of this important issue and work towards a better future for our city."

Why do we need unions anyway? Because they are essential for America. Unions are the only large-scale movement left in America that persistently acts as a countervailing balance against corporate power. They act in the economic interests of the middle, working class. But the decline of unions over the past few decades has left corporations and the rich with essentially no powerful opposition. You may take issue with a particular union's position on an issue, but remember they are the only real organized check on the power of the business community in this country. RTW laws are anti-union, pro-business
