Gascón’s plan won’t work, targets the wrong people and wastes valuable public resources: you simply cannot win the “War on Drugs†one or two crack rocks — or crumbs — at a time.
Organized by MoveOn.org, Center for Community Change, Democracy for America, Doctors for America, Health Care for American Now, and TrueMajority, a rally held yesterday in San Francisco drew as many as 5,000 to Alioto Plaza.
Garamendi, a Democrat, won with 24.84 percent of the vote. He will face Republican Party candidate David Harmer (20.44 percent), Green Party candidate Jeremy Cloward (0.55 percent), American Indepdent Party candidate Jerome Denham (0.25 percent) and Peace and Freedom Party candidate Mary C. McIlroy (0.26 percent) in the runoff election in November.
Referring to a heavily redacted December 2004 report (originally commissioned by CIA director George Tenet) detailing torture of prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan, it “describes the use of abusive interrogation techniques including forced nudity, sleep deprivation, dietary manipulation and stress positions.” Far worse ones were understated or redacted entirely.
Our task now is to lobby our elected officials and government so that they, in turn, can influence governments across the world to support a united Ireland. This is an issue that concerns all people, regardless of background. We now have an opportunity to seize the high moral ground and respect the wishes of the Irish people. It is time for a new approach to be adopted.
