{"id":1413,"date":"2009-09-03T15:14:28","date_gmt":"2009-09-03T23:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/2009\/09\/03\/san-francisco-joins-national-coordinated-rallies-in-support-of-healthcare-reform\/"},"modified":"2009-09-04T09:28:15","modified_gmt":"2009-09-04T17:28:15","slug":"san-francisco-joins-national-coordinated-rallies-in-support-of-healthcare-reform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/1413\/san-francisco-joins-national-coordinated-rallies-in-support-of-healthcare-reform\/","title":{"rendered":"San Francisco Joins National Coordinated Rallies <br>in Support of Healthcare Reform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fogcityjournal.com\/images\/photos2009\/healthcare_reform_090902\/_w2w9338_std.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><br \/>\nA rally for healthcare reform and passage of the Affordable Health Choices Act,<br \/>\nwas held in San Francisco yesterday.<br \/>\n<strong>Photos by Luke Thomas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/author\/luke\/\">Luke Thomas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>September 3, 2009<\/p>\n<p>As Congress wraps up its summer recess, healthcare reform rallies are being held across the nation to call on Congress to pass HR 3200, the Affordable Health Choices Act.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by MoveOn.org, Center for Community Change, Democracy for America, Doctors for America, Health Care for American Now, and TrueMajority, a rally held yesterday in San Francisco drew as many as 5,000 Bay Area residents to Alioto Plaza.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When Congress gets back in session right after Labor Day, it&rsquo;s time for them to immediately pass HR 3200, the Affordable Health Choices Act,&rdquo; UC Berkeley Center chair Ken Jacobs told rally participants who held signs that read &ldquo;Doctors for Reform,&rdquo; &ldquo;Healthcare not Warfare,&rdquo; &ldquo;Healthcare: Yes, Insurance companies: No,&rdquo; &ldquo;Pre-existing condition? Good luck!&rdquo; and &ldquo;Blue Dogs: Heel!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In the current system we have today, people can be denied healthcare coverage because they have a pre-existing condition, charged more because they&rsquo;re older, charged more because of their age or their gender,&rdquo; Jacobs said.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--> If enacted, HR 3200 would provide affordable, quality health care for all Americans and control spiraling costs in health care spending.  It would also enact insurance market reforms to prohibit discrimination and rescission practiced by health insurance companies.<\/p>\n<p>It would also create a public option that would compete with private health insurance for the 45 million Americans currently without health insurance.  Financial risk for the public option would be spread between employees, employers and the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the nation&rsquo;s call for reform, insurance and pharmaceutical industry lobbies have mounted disinformation and fear campaigns in a desperate attempt to protect the status quo and their profit-driven monopolies.<\/p>\n<p>The US is the only industrialized country that does not provide a form of socialized medicine to its citizens.
