Photos by Luke Thomas. <\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/author\/luke\/\">Luke Thomas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>June 11, 2010<\/p>\n<p>As many as 200 footy fans descended on San Francisco Civic Center today all eager to watch under clear blue skies the second match of the 2010 World Cup between Uruguay and France.<\/p>\n<p>The match was broadcast live on a giant monitor at no cost to taxpayers courtesy of SF Recreation and Parks in partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americascores.org\/\">American Scores<\/a>, a non-profit organization that teaches soccer to children in Bay Area public schools, and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200218110004\/http:\/\/www.teacherbus.com:80\/index.html\">TeacherBus<\/a>, a for-profit organization dedicated to combing recreation with education.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cThe World Cup brings people from every nation together in our international city to celebrate the thrill of sport and the spirit of competition,\u201d said Mayor Gavin Newsom. \u201cThere\u2019s no greater sporting event than the World Cup and we hope soccer fans of all ages will come out to City Hall\u2019s front yard to enjoy the games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/images\/photos2010\/world_cup_d1_20100611\/_w2w3273_std.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite losing a player in the final minutes of the match due to a double-yellow card, a steadfast Uruguan defense managed to hold France to a lackluster 0-0 draw.
