File photo by Luke Thomas.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/author\/luke\/\">Luke Thomas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>January 13, 2011<\/p>\n<p>Public Defender Jeff Adachi has not given up his quest to rein in unsustainable health and pension care costs, Fog City Journal can confirm.<\/p>\n<p>During an interview Tuesday, Adachi was asked if there was any truth to a recent rumor suggesting he was considering placing a modified version of Prop B on the ballot this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know me, I\u2019m not one to give up easily,\u201d Adachi responded. \u201cWe learned a lot in that (Prop B) campaign.  Obviously I would revise it. Labor has said they\u2019re going to solve this problem.  We\u2019ll see, but this is still the biggest problem facing the city that no one\u2019s talking about.  It\u2019s like the huge elephant in City Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cJust today,\u201d Adachi continued, \u201cthe pension liability to the city went up one percent \u2013 more than what was estimated a month ago \u2013 that\u2019s another $30 million.  Thank you, thank you, opponents of Prop B.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Labor groups and virtually the entire political establishment opposed Prop B on the grounds that it was inequitable, that it unfairly doubled city employees\u2019 dependent healthcare insurance contributions.  The November measure lost with 56 percent of voters opposed, 43 percent in favor.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to criticism that Prop B was regressive and inequitable, Adachi said the new measure would be revised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were concerned with their health care costs,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have definitely addressed that.
