Photo via Local 2 Unite Here.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>By Marc Norton<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>March 9, 2011<\/p>\n<p>At a time when workers everywhere are either in retreat or fighting desperately to hold the line, UNITE HERE hotel workers have scored a major victory, securing solid gains in wages, benefits and working conditions &#8212; in a drawn-out battle\u00a0against one of finance capital\u2019s largest corporate behemoths.<\/p>\n<p>The Blackstone Group, which owns Hilton Hotels, rolled over and gave up the brass ring, agreeing to contract settlements in San Francisco, Chicago and Honolulu that cover nearly 4,000 workers.\u00a0 Blackstone is a private equity company that manages around $100 billion in assets.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Hotel workers have now shown clearly that we can raise the banner of <strong>NO CONCESSIONS<\/strong>, fight and win against the biggest of the big.\u00a0 Like the brave workers in Wisconsin and the Midwest, we are standing tall, and intend to stay on our feet through thick and thin.<\/p>\n<p>Here in San Francisco, after an 18-month fight, Hilton agreed to a contract settlement that includes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Wage increases<\/strong>, retroactive to August 2009 when the contract expired, a total of $2 more per hour for non-tipped workers.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Continuation of health care<\/strong> benefits for workers, dependents and retirees,      with no increase in monthly payments.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>An increase in pensions <\/strong>to $40\u00a0monthly per-year-of-service for      those who retire through December 2014.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>A reduction in the workload for room cleaners <\/strong>when they have 10 or more checkouts.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement includes many other gains, including additional recall rights for laid-off workers, increased vacations for long-term workers, increased contributions to the Legal and Child\/Elder Care funds, limiting the use of credit checks in hiring, and stronger successorship protections.<\/p>\n<p>These gains in San Francisco mirror similar gains in Chicago and Honolulu.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, in the words of Mike Casey, President of UNITE HERE Local 2, \u201cThis is a watershed moment, but the fight is by no means over.\u00a0 There are still 50 plus hotels that need to come to their senses and settle with us\u201d here in San Francisco.\u00a0\u00a0And there are many other hotel bosses\u00a0around the country that have yet to understand that hotel workers\u00a0will fight to the finish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManagement settles when the cost of the fight exceeds the cost of settlement,\u201d said Casey.\u00a0 \u201cIt is a business decision for them.\u201d\u00a0 But it is a matter of solidarity and responsibility to our fellow workers, families and friends that motivates\u00a0us &#8212; and that is why we will win.<\/p>\n<p>One of those hotels that still needs to learn its lesson is <strong>Hotel Frank<\/strong>, a \u201cboutique\u201d hotel where I worked as a bellman for nearly twelve years.\u00a0 Then, last May, <strong>Wells Fargo<\/strong> foreclosed on the property.\u00a0 The new management unilaterally abrogated the Union contract.\u00a0 Subsequently I was summarily fired.<\/p>\n<p>So I take all this somewhat personally.\u00a0 But Hotel Frank workers, like other hotel workers, are a solid bunch.\u00a0 We just don\u2019t give up.\u00a0 I will be back to work at the hotel, along with other workers there who have been unfairly fired.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, March 19, Local 2 workers will be participating in the National Day of Action on the 8<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.\u00a0 Solidarity knows no boundaries, from the Middle East to the Mid West.\u00a0 Join us at the noon rally at UN Plaza (7<sup>th<\/sup> and Market Streets).\u00a0 We will march from there to boycotted hotels.\u00a0 For more information see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.answersf.org\/\">www.answersf.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And feel free to join us every Friday at the Hotel Frank picket line, Geary and Mason, from 1pm to 5:30pm.\u00a0 For more information on our fight, see www.HotelFrankSF.info.<\/p>\n<p>No concessions!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hotel workers have now shown clearly that we can raise the banner of NO CONCESSIONS, fight and win against the biggest of the big.
