Photo by Luke Thomas. <\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/author\/luke\/\">Luke Thomas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Editor\u2019s Note:  The following interview with Chinese Chamber of Commerce consultant and powerbroker Rose Pak was conducted Saturday following the opening of the campaign headquarters for the Run Ed Run campaign.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>June 27, 2011<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: How many people do you estimate came here today?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: &#8220;Including the 175 that we sent out at 8:30, 9 o&#8217;clock this morning, so I think we have over 600 people.<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: You&#8217;ve mentioned that you&#8217;re organizing a signature gathering campaign. Has that already started or is that starting today?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP:\u00a0 &#8220;No, we started already.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: And when did you start the signature gathering campaign?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: &#8220;About a week ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: Do you have an idea of how many signatures you&#8217;ve gathered so far?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: &#8220;We, right now, have about fifteen thousand already.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: And what&#8217;s your goal?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: &#8220;Fifty thousand, or whatever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: By the August 6 deadline, or before?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: &#8220;Before. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: So what do you make of it all? Ed Lee continues to say he\u2019s not going to run.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><!--more--><\/em>RP: \u201cMaybe some people are cut out to be your conventional politician candidate and maybe he\u2019ll run an unconventional campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: I guess he could be a write-in candidate, couldn&#8217;t he?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t go that far but I think he certainly can keep on doing his job and I know that he will never be on the phone dialing for dollars, that\u2019s for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: Has he given any indication to you privately that he might run?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cNo, I never ask.  I tease him a lot, but I have never asked him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: He seems adamant that he\u2019s not going to run.  He\u2019s been asked so many times.  What happens if he doesn\u2019t run?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cIf he doesn\u2019t run then we\u2019ll meet and reassess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: I understand your goal in the mayor\u2019s race is \u2018anybody but Leland Yee.\u2019  If Ed Lee doesn\u2019t run, then whom would you support for mayor?  Would you support Herrera or someone else?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cYes, Herrera or someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: Can you clarify your comments in a recent Bay Citizen report about politics in San Francisco moving to the center?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cI think what is so bad, the left movement has been dominated by Chris Daly and Aaron Peskin and we\u2019re all lefties but we\u2019re not their kind of lefties.  They are bent on destruction against everything.  Their type of left progressiveness is over I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: What about John Avalos\u2019 campaign?  Do you see his campaign as being part of that legacy, or do you see him trying to distance himself from it?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cNo, I think John Avalos is a genuine progressive just like I see Ed Lee is a genuine progressive.  Your definition of progressiveness, meaning empowering all classes of people, all races of people, and no discrimination about color, religion or background\u2026 but you have Chris Daly and run by the Bay Guardian \u2013 they\u2019re not talking about people of color and different persuasions is their brand of liberalism and I don\u2019t believe in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: You\u2019re a progressive and you\u2019re a lefty and you\u2019re supporting Herrera &#8211; do you think Herrera is a lefty?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cNo, he\u2019s an honorable man.  I don\u2019t see they\u2019re trying to push John Avalos into their corner [sic].  The city is sick and tired of the brand of liberalism that is personified by Aaron Peskin and Chris Daly \u2013 anybody that\u2019s not associated with them, they call it centrist or whatever \u2013 their progressiveness is bent on destroying everything against any growth, against anything.  They certainly don\u2019t encompass people of color in their vocabulary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: Who do think is the current frontrunner in this race at the moment?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cWithout Ed Lee?  I think it\u2019s Dennis [Herrera].\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: You don\u2019t think Leland Yee is the frontrunner?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cNo, I don\u2019t think he\u2019s the frontrunner.  He\u2019s spent $3 million in the last two years taking money from everybody and couldn\u2019t break through 14, 15, whatever, percentage \u2013 that\u2019s pretty pathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: What do you say to those people who say the only reason you want Ed Lee to run for mayor is because you want to defeat Leland Yee?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cI think Leland Yee is a poor example of our people.  I don\u2019t see him has any moral turpitude and conviction [sic].\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU: Why are you supporting Ed Lee?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cHe is a decent person. He is a hard-working person and he didn\u2019t seek the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU : He\u2019s specifically stated he doesn\u2019t want the job.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cYes, but he is doing the job very well and so then we should convince him. He has a civic duty to continue what he\u2019s doing for the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU : He has said he doesn\u2019t want to campaign.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cSo, let\u2019s campaign for him instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU: Do you think that\u2019s possible?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cWell, nothing ventured, nothing gained.  It will be a very unconventional campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU: The person running for office in your eyes is not doing any campaigning\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cYeah, so what\u2019s wrong with that? That\u2019s why he\u2019s such an attractive candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU: Because he doesn\u2019t want the office?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cYes, he doesn\u2019t like the trappings of the office.  He doesn\u2019t like to be dialing for dollars.  He doesn\u2019t like doing those type of work. [sic]\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU: And that\u2019s why you like him as a candidate?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cThat\u2019s right, he is unconventional.  He is hard working and you know he\u2019s doing it not for the glory of Ed Lee and he\u2019s not using this as a stepping stone to run for higher office or another office, so there\u2019s a lot to be said about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU : Do you like some of the other candidates?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cSome of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU: You like Dennis?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU : Anybody else in particular?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cYes, I like quite a few of them, but I don\u2019t think they can win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU: Clearly you\u2019re giving money to the whole idea to get Ed to run.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cI\u2019m not giving money to anything. I\u2019m helping to raise money to recruit Ed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>FCJ: And if he doesn\u2019t run?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cWell, then we\u2019ll re-examine.  I\u2019ll talk to my people and we\u2019ll come to a conclusion then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU: When I talked to him he didn\u2019t say he wasn\u2019t running. He basically said he doesn\u2019t want to run.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>RP: \u201cI know. I know. So, yes, he didn\u2019t want to be the [interim] mayor and he became the [interim] mayor and he\u2019s doing a bang up job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>KTVU: And so you\u2019d be okay leading that campaign without him really being actively involved?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s correct.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RP: \u201cI think what is so bad, the left movement has been dominated by Chris Daly and Aaron Peskin and we\u2019re all lefties but we\u2019re not their kind of lefties.
