Photo by Luke Thomas.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/author\/luke\/\">Luke Thomas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>September 15, 2011<\/p>\n<p>The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (SFBC) today announced its eagerly anticipated endorsements in the ranked-choice race for mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Supervisor John Avalos, Board of Supervisors President David Chiu and interim Mayor Ed Lee were each endorsed in that order.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->&#8220;This year we had the most bicycle-friendly candidates in the city&#8217;s history &#8212; many candidates understand the importance of how investing in bikeways and encouraging more people to bike is the best way to help make a better San Francisco for everyone,&#8221; the Coalition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfbike.org\/\">wrote on its website<\/a>. &#8220;The mayor&#8217;s race is a critical concern for better everyday biking \u2014 the next mayor will have the opportunity to lead San Francisco through four years (or more) of dramatic improvements to the bicycling environment &#8212; from completing comfortable crosstown bikeways for people of all ages and abilities to get around in safety and comfort; to expanding the Safe Routes to School program to every school in the city; to growing a citywide robust bike sharing system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With a membership of 13,000 and growing, the SFBC endorsement is considered significant, especially to Avalos who has been an active SFBC member for over a decade and who is currently sponsoring legislation to increase indoor bike parking in the City.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Bike Coalition has a very active, engaged membership,&#8221; Avalos said in statement. &#8220;It\u2019s an honor to be endorsed.
