Photo by Luke Thomas.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/author\/katanderson\/\">Kat Anderson<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>March 19, 2012<\/p>\n<p>Following acceptance of a plea agreement that convicts him of false imprisonment, San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi\u00a0 tearfully apologized today for the pain he has caused his wife, son, colleagues at the Sheriff\u2019s Department, and the people of San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>Missing from his prepared statement, which followed his formal sentencing this morning at the Hall of Justice, was a recount of the events that occurred on December 31 that led him to this point. When pressed, he stated, \u201cAs I understand, some of this continues and that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m being told to be a bit guarded.\u201d He also did not respond to a question of whether he had the moral authority to continue running the Sheriff\u2019s Department.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Instead, Mirkarimi took full responsibility for the events that occurred on December 31, forcefully stating that he had \u201cno excuses.\u201d With the aid of recent counseling, he realized he was not the person that he thought he was. \u201cI am addressing my arrogance and my anger issues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mirkarimi repeated his desire to be reunited with his family and said he will seek couples\u2019 counseling when the \u201cstay away\u201d order is lifted. The order has prevented him from being with his wife, Eliana Lopez, since early January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI so badly want to reunite with my family, my wife\u2026I love and miss her. I miss our intimacy and laughter,\u201d Mirkarimi said through tears.<\/p>\n<p>Mirkarimi praised the staff of the Sheriff\u2019s Department for successfully running things while he has undergone \u201cthis nightmare which began before I was Sheriff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department is running right and well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As for himself, he described this experience as giving him a deeper understanding of what it takes to be Sheriff \u201cand a better person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sought to correct what he called a misstatement about domestic violence being a private, family matter. \u201cI do not believe that domestic violence is a private family matter,\u201d he declared. Rather, he was advised days before he was charged to respond to inquiries about his personal life that it was \u201cprivate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the seven years that I was on the Board of Supervisors, I was a steadfast and avid advocate for the (anti) domestic violence community.\u201d He promised to work hard to regain the confidence of the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am ashamed of myself\u2026I will devote myself to being a better public servant\u2026someone who should not hide from my mistakes,\u201d Mirkarimi concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Lopez is expected to provide a full public statement tomorrow, Mirkarimi&#8217;s defense attorney, Lidia Stiglich, said.<\/p>\n<p>More coverage to follow.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/images\/photos2012\/ross_mirkarimi_gascon_presser_20120319\/mw2w9758_std.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Missing from his prepared statement was a recount of the events that occurred on December 31 that led him to this point.
