Police are investigating a possible connection between two sexual assaults on June 15th and June 18th in San Francisco’s Mission District. The latest assault occurred near the intersection of 19th and Capp streets.<\/p><\/div>\n

June 23, 2012<\/p>\n

The San Francisco Police Department has identified the victim of a possible sexual assault which was first reported in a local news journal. The assault, which allegedly occurred in the early morning of hours of Monday, June 18, 2012, near 19th Street and Capp Street, was never reported to the Police Department. An investigation into the incident was initiated after Inspectors from the Special Victims Unit interviewed the author of the \u201cMission Local\u201d article<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Investigators looking into the June 18th incident have discovered some similarities between the previously unreported incident, and a separate attempted sexual assault case, which was reported to police on June 15th and occurred just five blocks away. On June 15, 2012 on Erie Alley near 13th Street, a woman was approached from behind by two men who grabbed her from behind and attempted to sexually assault her.<\/p>\n

In both incidents, the women were assaulted by two men, one short, possibly 5\u2019-04\u201d and the other taller, about 5\u2019-10\u201d. The men were described as being a Hispanic and an African American, or two Hispanic males.<\/p>\n

Additional investigative personnel have been assigned to determine if there is any actual connection between these two incidents and Mission Police Station has increased patrols in the area.<\/p>\n

The San Francisco Police Department is requesting that anyone having information on either of these incidents contact the SFPD by calling: the Anonymous Tip Line at (415) 575-4444 or Text a Tip via your mobile phone to TIP411 and type SFPD followed by your message. To report a life threatening emergency or crime in progress, call 911.<\/p>\n

Safety Tips<\/strong><\/p>\n

SFPD and SAFE recommend the folllewing tips to prevent becoming a victim of street crime:<\/p>\n

– Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Walk and act with confidence.<\/p>\n

– Follow your gut instinct. If a situation feels uneasy, take a different route.<\/p>\n

– Own the street and know where you are going.- Walk with your head up and scan the area as you go. Make good eye Contact with people around you.<\/p>\n

– Walk on well-lit\/busy streets and avoid taking shortcuts on quiet alleys or parking lots.<\/p>\n

– Take note of potential safe places enroute.<\/p>\n

– Keep a polite distance from strangers.<\/p>\n

– Travel with company whenever possible particularly during dark or quiet hours. At a minimum, let another person know your itinerary and your expected time of return.<\/p>\n

– Alcohol and drug may impede your judgment and make you look more like an easy target. Be aware of how much alcohol you have consumed. If you believe someone or yourself seems over their limit seek help.<\/p>\n

– Have your car or house keys ready so you do not linger unaware at your car or the door of your residence.<\/p>\n

– Trust your instincts. If you feel threatened, take immediate action by yelling or running. Yell fire or knife, not help. Carry a Whistle and use it to get the attention of others if you feel threatened.<\/p>\n

– Have your cell phone easily accessible in case you need to call 9-1-1. Keep your cell phone fully charged at all times.<\/p>\n
