Photo by Shane Menez, Fog City Journal.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Besides the few eruptions of \u201cmic check\u201d followed by staged performances of Occupy-like general assemblies, and the end of the night hip-hop performances where a handful of people gathered to dance, the crowd primarily focused on the variety of political poster art.<\/p>\n<p>Divided into four categories \u2014 encampment, direct democracy, strategy and self-organizing \u2014 the posters represent a historic timeline of the movement.<\/p>\n<p>Visual Arts Director Betti-Sue Hertz and assistant Amanda Verwey combed the Internet for Occupy-related art and reached out to local artists for material. They gathered more than 50 political posters emblematic of the movement\u2019s social messages from 25 Bay Area graphic designers.<\/p>\n<p>Popular poster illustrator Chuck Sperry felt the motives behind Occupy were overshadowed by the negative publicity it has received.<\/p>\n<p>The Occupy Movement in the Bay Area commanded national scrutiny last fall when a series of clashes erupted between protesters and police in Oakland and on the UC Berkeley campus. The violence reported by the mainstream media influenced many to become skeptics of the movement.<\/p>\n<p>When Sperry saw the public stance toward Occupy turn negative, he decided to do something about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought, let\u2019s do a bright sunny poster about Occupy,\u201d Sperry said, \u201csomething positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sperry brought a number of his brightly colored orange and yellow prints that are on display at the museum and handed them out for free.<\/p>\n<p>Before he created a poster for Occupy, Sperry already believed in its message: Economic inequality was growing wider and corporate and government corruption, including the mortgage crisis of 2008, had taken its financial toll. Then came Occupy.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators were \u201cshouting out at the system and were all yelling a big \u2018no\u2019 in unison,\u201d Sperry said. \u201cI related with that\u201d and \u201cI wanted in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The movement encompassed people and perspectives from various sectors of society. Demonstrators struggled over how to get their messages across.<\/p>\n<p>That is when Occupy Design was born. Adam Levitas helped design many of the simple, black and white info-graphics for Occupy that hung on the walls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is easy to dismiss people when they are holding a cardboard sign with writing in lipstick on it,\u201d Levitas said, adding that it is much harder to argue with a more professional looking info-graphic.<\/p>\n<p>The posters are marketing for the movement and info-graphics make complicated concepts more digestible for larger audiences.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Levitas added, marketing tools like this were only available to other side \u2014 the one percent.<\/p>\n<p>Although Nolan said she probably would never have participated in an Occupy event, she found the exhibit, its color and depth, powerful and inspiring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has made me think about all that has been taken from us,\u201d she said. \u201cFrom me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone was enthusiastic about the art or the Occupy movement.<\/p>\n<p>Maryann Brooks handed out fliers that said black people were the one percent within Occupy and said she thought much of the art was directed more toward a white audience.<\/p>\n<p>The American Dream is for white people, not blacks, she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4807\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/4804\/occupy-this-art-show-yerba-buena-showcases-resistance-history-through-art\/dsc_0259\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4807\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4807\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4807\" title=\"DSC_0259\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/07\/DSC_0259-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/07\/DSC_0259-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/07\/DSC_0259-332x500.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oakland rapper Davin \u201cDo D.A.T.\u201d Anthony Thompson performs at the Occupy Bay Area art show on July 14, 2012 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Photo by Shane Menez, Fog City Journal<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The exhibition should have involved more collective, community-based art, she added, instead of the multitude of individual works of art, which made up the majority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a black woman living in San Francisco, we are being erased,\u201d said Brooks, a performance studies graduate student. \u201cThe economic inequalities are so intense here, I feel like all the people here are broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition also included historic posters and photos reminiscent of previous political struggles in the area.
