{"id":5178,"date":"2012-11-03T10:31:05","date_gmt":"2012-11-03T18:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/?p=5178"},"modified":"2012-11-04T06:46:24","modified_gmt":"2012-11-04T14:46:24","slug":"breed-responds-to-seiu-1021-attack-mailer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/5178\/breed-responds-to-seiu-1021-attack-mailer\/","title":{"rendered":"Breed Responds to SEIU 1021 &#8220;Hit Piece&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_5179\" style=\"width: 408px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5179\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5179\" title=\"London_Breed_SEIU_1021\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/11\/London_Breed_SEIU_1021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/11\/London_Breed_SEIU_1021.jpg 398w, https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/11\/London_Breed_SEIU_1021-300x296.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/11\/London_Breed_SEIU_1021-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A mailer funded by an independent expenditure committee controlled by SEIU 1021 depicts former Redevelopment Agency Commissioner London Breed as being in the pockets of real estate interests.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/author\/luke\/\">Luke Thomas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>November 3, 2012<\/p>\n<p>London Breed, a leading candidate in the race for District 5 Supervisor, pledged Friday in an interview with <em>Fog City Journal<\/em> to protect tenant\u2019s rights and to oppose any attacks on rent control if she were to be elected to the most progressive and tenant-heavy seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.<\/p>\n<p>Her pledge comes on the heels of recently landed oppositional mailer funded by SEIU 1021 that accuses Breed of being \u201cbankrolled by landlords and realtors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLandlords and realtors are bankrolling London Breed because she\u2019ll vote for them, not for you,\u201d the mailer, which depicts Breed being showered with $100 bills, states. \u201cLondon Breed doesn\u2019t list them on her website, but she can\u2019t hide the truth: she\u2019s endorsed by San Francisco\u2019s apartment owners, building owners and realtors because they know she\u2019ll be a loyal vote for landlords, not for renters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5180\" title=\"London_Breed_SEIU_1021_2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/11\/London_Breed_SEIU_1021_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/11\/London_Breed_SEIU_1021_2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/11\/London_Breed_SEIU_1021_2-228x300.jpg 228w, https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2012\/11\/London_Breed_SEIU_1021_2-380x500.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>SEIU 1021 endorsed community organizer Julian Davis, Mayor Ed Lee-appointed Supervisor Christina Olague and College Board Commissioner John Rizzo in the ranked choice race that will be decided by voters on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Breed released a press statement Friday accusing Olague \u201cand her backers\u201d of taking a page \u201cright out of the Romney playbook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the truth isn\u2019t working and the voters aren\u2019t supporting you, resort to lies and deception,\u201d Breed stated in her press release. \u201cThe hit pieces are flying accusing London of opposing rent control. That might be funny if it wasn&#8217;t such a blatant lie. London grew up in public housing, has been a life-long renter and lives in a rent-controlled apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Records filed with the San Francisco Ethics Commission show combined spending of $50,000 in support of Breed from two independent expenditure committees funded by the San Francisco Association of Realtors.\u00a0 Total supportive independent expenditure funding for Breed is $69,000.\u00a0 Independent expenditures spent in opposition to Breed from the San Francisco Tenants Union and SEIU 1021 totals $10,000.<\/p>\n<p>A review of contributions to Breed\u2019s candidate-controlled committee shows a pattern of strong support from real estate interests.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, Breed said she doesn\u2019t know why landlords and real estate interests are backing her candidacy and pledged to protect rent control and tenants rights if elected to the District seat where more than 70 percent of its residents are renters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what their thoughts are or what they think they\u2019re going to get, but the one thing I have been clear about with people in terms of any promise is, I am willing to be open-minded, I am willing to listen &#8211; but I don\u2019t owe anybody anything,\u201d Breed said, referring to the supportive independent expenditure funding of her candidacy from real estate interests. \u201cPersonally, I\u2019d rather see all that money spent on my kids giving them stipends to focus on schools, to do volunteer activities and other things that are needed in this community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal is to focus on running a positive campaign, communicating my message and staying focused on what I need to do, and I think it\u2019s really disgusting that it has taken this kind of turn.\u00a0 I don\u2019t support negative attack ads whether it\u2019s against me or anyone else running in this race,\u201d Breed added.<\/p>\n<p><em>Why do you think the realtors and landlords are supporting your candidacy?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not here to be anybody\u2019s puppet. I\u2019m here to work for the people of this District,\u201d Breed said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Can you state categorically that if you were elected that you would not in anyway, shape or form, support any attack on tenant\u2019s rights or rent control?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHell, yes,\u201d Breed responded. \u201cThat almost goes without saying. I am a renter.\u00a0 My mother is in a rent-controlled unit.\u00a0 It would be like trying to put my family out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not do anything as supervisor to destroy the integrity of what rent control represents.\u00a0 I will not do anything that\u2019s against rent control and I will do everything to protect tenant\u2019s rights in this city as a supervisor,\u201d Breed added.<\/p>\n<p><em>And, if elected, you would not vote in support of any attack on tenant protections?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHell, no.\u201d Breed responded.<\/p>\n<p><em>So why are they supporting your candidacy?\u00a0 What do you think they think they\u2019re going to get from you?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think people in District 5 don\u2019t like all this big money bullcrap that is coming into our community and they may have seen that I was doing really well and, I don\u2019 know, it may be a tactic or what have you.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know, but I don\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>You don\u2019t like the fact that the realtors and landlords are backing your candidacy? Is that what you\u2019re saying?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t like the fact that people are spending money on these independent groups whether it\u2019s to support me or be against anyone else.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a fan of that.\u00a0 I don\u2019t support that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Are you saying that the money the realtors and landlords have spent on your behalf is a complete waste of their money because they\u2019re not going to get anything from you?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUmmm, I mean, I guess you can say that because\u2026\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand what they would expect to get from me.\u00a0 What could they get from the District 5 Supervisor, the one who has over 70 percent of the people in this District who are renters?\u00a0 The renters or the people of this District who are impacted by the laws we push at City Hall are my top priority,\u201d Breed said. \u201cWhen I look at how much money is going into this campaign, it\u2019s crazy \u2013 and anyone who gives me a dime, a dollar, or $500, if they think that I owe them anything then they\u2019ve got a whole another thing coming.\u00a0 The only thing I owe anyone is to do the right thing, to be honest, to work hard for the people of this District.\u00a0 I don\u2019t owe anybody a vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>But what do you think the realtors and landlords are thinking in terms of what they can get from you?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to ask them.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to tell you, I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 This is not a popular landlord District so I don\u2019t know what to tell you.\u00a0 I mean, obviously, all of this stuff that\u2019s going on, I just feel in a lot of ways is a way to, you know, bring me down potentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(The San Francisco Association of Realtors did not respond to multiple requests seeking comment).<\/p>\n<p><em>Are you saying the realtors and the landlords are spending all this money to bring you down?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u00a0 People in District 5 don\u2019t like that stuff.\u00a0 They don\u2019t like big money coming in here to try and influence decisions for District 5 candidates.\u00a0 This is a community supervisor seat.\u00a0 This is not a playground,\u201d Breed said.<\/p>\n<p><em>With this attack against you from SEIU 1021, voters are being left with the impression that you are carrying water for the realtors, landlords and downtown business interests.\u00a0 What do you have to say about that?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I have to say is that I am not carrying the water for anybody, but the folks that have been consistently neglected by folks who try to have their whole power machines to control what\u2019s going on in San Francisco, which negatively impacts the people in my community, that\u2019s who I\u2019m carrying the water for \u2013 people who don\u2019t have money to defend themselves,\u201d Breed said. \u201cI\u2019ve got a mouthpiece and I\u2019m going to use it to make sure I do what\u2019s necessary for the folks in this community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been running a really good race,\u201d Breed added. \u201cPeople slammed the door on me, they wrote me off.\u00a0 Some of the same people funding these independent expenditures tried to destroy me and work against me in so many different ways \u2013 and that\u2019s the thing, I\u2019m not here to be anybody\u2019s puppet.\u00a0 That\u2019s just who I\u2019m never going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>In retrospect, would you have preferred that the realtors and landlords not backed your candidacy?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, they\u2019re doing it on their own merits through an independent expenditure,\u201d Breed said.<\/p>\n<p><em>But wouldn\u2019t it have been better for you if they hadn\u2019t spent all this money on your candidacy via independent expenditure committees, because they are hurting your profile in the District, right?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. Definitely,\u201d Breed said.<\/p>\n<p>SEIU 1021 Political Director and former District 6 Supervisor Chris Daly said Breed\u2019s disassociation from the spending in support of her candidacy from real estate interests amounts to \u201cplausible deniability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s plausible deniability,\u201d Daly said.\u00a0 \u201cYou can say that you don\u2019t want these independent expenditures on your behalf, but let\u2019s be honest &#8211; it\u2019s done with a wink and a nod.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked why the SEIU 1021 mailer was necessary, Daly said, \u201cIf you follow San Francisco politics, you know that at a certain point you need to follow the money, and the forces in San Francisco politics that are the most pro-development and anti-rent control forces are all in with David Lee (District 1) &#8211; and they are now all in with London Breed.\u00a0 And the reason why they are assisting these candidates is because their assessment is that these two candidates are going to be the best for them at City Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daly said he does not consider the mailer against Breed to be an &#8220;attack mailer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that it is more educational because it highlights who is spending the most significant dollars in the D5 race,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London Breed, a leading candidate in the race for District 5 Supervisor, pledged Friday in an interview with Fog City Journal to protect tenant\u2019s rights and to oppose any attacks on rent control if she were to be elected to the most progressive and tenant-heavy seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":5179,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[43,191,222,17],"tags":[163,32,1154,1292,1110,971,1421,1111,65,1979,1980,1234],"class_list":["post-5178","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-housing","category-labor","category-news","category-politics","tag-board-of-supervisors","tag-chris-daly","tag-christina-olague","tag-district-5","tag-ed-lee","tag-john-rizzo","tag-julian-davis","tag-london-breed","tag-san-francisco","tag-san-francisco-association-of-realtors","tag-san-francisco-tenants-union","tag-seiu-1021"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
