Birenbaum, past president of the Lawyers Club of San Francisco at its 66th Annual Supreme Court Luncheon.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>From the Office of San Francisco Public Defender<\/em><\/p>\n<p>October 31, 2013<\/p>\n<p>For fighting on behalf of the city\u2019s poorest residents, San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi has been honored with the Access to Justice Award, presented by the Lawyers Club of San Francisco at its 66th Annual Supreme Court Luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 29.<\/p>\n<p>Charles S. Birenbaum, past president of the Lawyers Club who currently chairs Greenburg Traurig LLC\u2019s Northern California offices, nominated Adachi for the public defender\u2019s innovative rehabilitative programs and his safeguarding of San Franciscans\u2019 constitutional rights. The luncheon, an annual event since 1948, was held at San Francisco\u2019s Fairmont Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very fortunate,\u201d Adachi said after accepting the award. \u201cMy job allows me to work with an incredible staff \u2013 92 attorneys and 80 investigators, paralegals and support staff who provide legal representation and access to justice to more than 20,000 people a year who cannot afford private attorneys. The stakes are high. Every day, life and liberty hang in the balance I love my job and remain passionate about fighting for the underdog\u2014not only my clients but my fellow public defenders across the country who work miracles on shoestring budgets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To increase access to justice, Adachi told attendees, public defender offices must be properly funded and programs that assist people with immigration, housing and employment law must be expanded.<\/p>\n<p>In attendance were Bay Area attorneys, law students, and state Supreme Court Justices, including Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who attended the same Sacramento junior high school and high school as Adachi.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5702\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5702\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5702\" alt=\"LCL Justices_std\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2013\/10\/LCL-Justices_std.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2013\/10\/LCL-Justices_std.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/2013\/10\/LCL-Justices_std-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Honoable Marvin R.
