January 8, 2014<\/p>\n

What:<\/strong> On Thursday, January 9th at 10:30 am, Dan Siegel will join supporters at 14th and Broadway to announce his candidacy for Mayor. Siegel, a long-time community advocate, has received early support from a broad swath of Oakland residents ranging from clergy to labor. \u00a0Confirmed participants include Pastor Harold Mayberry of First African Methodist Church and representatives from SEIU 87.<\/p>\n

“Oakland needs bold thinking to get moving in the right direction,\u201d said Siegel. \u201cI look forward to starting conversations on every street corner, and in every neighborhood, about our plans to implement policies that will bring economic and social justice to all Oaklanders.”<\/p>\n

Siegel\u2019s campaign will work with the community to develop innovative ideas to address safety in every Oakland neighborhood, build an economy that provides good paying jobs and keeps Oaklanders in Oakland, and improve our schools so they equitably serve all students.<\/p>\n

Siegel is a well-known civil rights lawyer and community advocate who has successfully represented victims of employment discrimination and government misconduct for 40 years. He graduated from UC Berkeley law school and was president of the UC student government and a respected leader of the anti-Vietnam War movement. He has served as president of both the Oakland School Board and the Oakland Housing Authority Commission and was an author of Oakland’s Community Policing Ordinance and the School’s District’s nationally acclaimed Nutrition Policy. Siegel has lived in East Oakland since 1975.<\/p>\n
