{"id":623,"date":"2008-06-27T17:00:56","date_gmt":"2008-06-28T01:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/2008\/06\/27\/jew-plea-agreement-fails-trial-date-set\/"},"modified":"2008-06-27T17:01:29","modified_gmt":"2008-06-28T01:01:29","slug":"jew-plea-agreement-fails-trial-date-set","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/623\/jew-plea-agreement-fails-trial-date-set\/","title":{"rendered":"Jew Plea Agreement Fails,<br> Trial Date Set"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/photos\/bos_swearing_in_070108\/mw2w6687_std.jpg\" height=\"333\" width=\"500\" \/><br \/>\nFormer District 4 Supervisor Ed Jew.<br \/>\n<strong>Photo by Luke Thomas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Julia Cheever<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>June 27, 2008<\/p>\n<p>Former San Francisco Supervisor Ed Jew was given a new date of Nov. 10 in federal court today for a trial on corruption charges after lawyers in the case told a judge that efforts to reach a plea agreement had failed.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor Michael Wang told U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, &#8220;The parties&#8217; efforts to resolve the case were not fruitful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jew, 48, faces two counts of bribery, two counts of mail fraud and one count of extortion for allegedly trying to extort $84,000 last year from the owners of tapioca drink stores and a dessert cafe in exchange for help in obtaining city permits.<\/p>\n<p>He resigned his post as a supervisor representing the city&#8217;s Sunset District in January amid allegations he lived in Burlingame rather than San Francisco while running for office in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Jew is the owner of a Chinatown flower shop. Outside of court, he said he is currently &#8220;taking care of my family and flower shop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Defense attorney Sara Rief said after the hearing, &#8220;We believe he is innocent and they don&#8217;t, so the case is going to trial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The jury trial in Illston&#8217;s San Francisco courtroom is expected to last about three weeks.
