Former San Francisco Police Commissioner Joe Alioto-Veronese is exploring a possible run in the 2010 race for District 2 Supervisor, Fog City Journal has learned.

“I have received dozens of requests from community leaders, neighborhood merchants and public safety officials to be their candidate in District 2. As a new father and a lifetime resident of the neighborhood, it would be an honor to fight for the priorities of the district and this great City,” Veronese responded to FCJ inquiry. “I am exploring the race in conference with my wife and family, and will decide timely.”

Veronese, 36, is the grandson of former San Francisco Mayor Joseph L. Alioto, and son of former San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Angela Alioto and Adolfo Veronese. He is a practicing civil-rights attorney and owns and operates a vineyard in Sonoma County.

Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed Veronese to the San Francisco Police Commission in 2004. Despite political pressure from Newsom, Veronese cast the deciding vote to elect Theresa Sparks as commission president, the first transgendered person to head a big city commission in the U.S.

In 2007 Veronese ran for California State Senate (District 3) against then incumbent Senator Carole Migden, but withdrew his candidacy three months before the Democratic Party Primary in June 2008. Veronese cited former Assemblymember Joe Nation’s candidacy as the primary reason for his withdrawal from the race.

Should he officially declare his candidacy, and all expectations are that he will, Veronese will face stiff opposition from current front-runner Janet Reilly. Other District 2 contenders include Mark Farrell, Vilma Guinto Peoro, Robert McCullough, and Allen Zigman.

  1. Anyone who’s seen Newsom appointee Alioto-Veronese at work on the Police Commission knows what a bad idea this is.

  2. Agreed, I’m sick of the oligarchy, patriarchy, matriarchy, the whole fukin Pacific Heights mafioso, feinstein, pelosi, newsom, fisher(rip), et al. However i still have a very soft/hard spot for Angela, she does have heart, cojones and hutzpah, which is something 90%+ of our ‘local leaders’ lack. Unfortunately Missing in Action Pier has tarnished both daddy and the family name.

  3. So here we have a case of one family and its delusions enabling the ambitions of another. Alioto elects Janet Reilly.

  4. He can keep exploring. Just the name Alioto has been ruined by Michela. If astro turf Chiu could beat him, you know that MAP has ruined the Alioto name.

  5. Ummh … Does the Alioto family believe that the District 2 Supervisor seat is a family heirloom?? Haven’t we suffered enough with Joe’s cousin, Michela??

For crying out loud, we had a Revolution from England to get rid of these family monarchies. And who are the community leaders in District 2 who are apparently clamoring to have Joe Alioto-Veronese run — *and* are not members of the Alioto family??

I grew up in Chicago, and I’ve had enough of family machine politics. I moved to California, because you can be a nobody and make it here. No one cares who your parents are, and what family you came from. That’s the way it should be …
