The family of beloved veteran Bay Area news anchor Pete Wilson, who passed away from a heart attack on Friday, says they appreciate the support from fans, friends, and colleagues of Wilson.

"We are overwhelmed, embraced and grateful for the expressions of sympathy and support we are experiencing. In a time of grief for our family we find comfort in knowing that Pete's larger family of friends, colleagues, viewers and listeners share this with us," Wilson's immediate family said in a statement.

Wilson, 62, died Friday night of a massive heart attack suffered during hip replacement surgery at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto.

Wilson co-anchored the 6 p.m. weekday KGO-TV, ABC7 newscast since 2002 and hosted a daily afternoon talk show for KGO-AM 810 NewsTalk since 2000. Prior to that, Wilson anchored newscasts for KRON-4 in San Francisco beginning in 1990 and KXTL-TV in Sacramento.

Wilson is survived by his wife, Sandra, and his son, Brendan. He lived in Marin County.

A private memorial for Wilson is being held today for close family and friends. A public service is expected, but the date and location have not yet been determined.
