California high court agrees to review same-sex marriage cases

Bay City News Service

December 20, 2006

The California Supreme Court has decided to review six cases addressing the constitutionality of state marriage law, the court reported this afternoon.

The cases were brought by same-sex couples seeking the right to marry.

In October, California Attorney General Bill Lockyer won a ruling from the state Court of Appeal upholding laws that require marriage to be between a man and a woman. Even though he won at that level, Lockyer asked the state's high court to review the ruling, saying it would bring "certainty, uniformity and finality'' to the issue.
