of underground fire

Bay City News Service

June 20, 2006

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. crews are investigating the cause of a underground fire at a manhole at Ellis and Polk streets in San Francisco today.

San Francisco fire officials received a call at 2:41 p.m. that there was an underground fire, according to a fire dispatcher.

PG&E spokeswoman Darlene Chiu said that a manhole cover was displaced and that someone saw smoke coming from inside.

Crews are preparing to enter the area and investigate what caused the manhole to dislodge.

"Not a single customer was affected and there were no injuries," Chiu said.

The area is cordoned off while an investigation is conducted, Chiu said.
